Typecasts In Exile: Snowbound & Down…

Filled in some holes in the collection, surprising how long it took to find a copy of Temple of Doom. You’d think it would be very common. That 25th Anniversary Last Starfighter was a great find too – it’s been the 80’s since I saw that one. One note on affordability; In Arizona Goodwills, the DVDs are usually $1.29 each. Up here in Connecticut, they’s $2.99 each. Still, better than “buying” it on a streaming service and not actually owning it. And let’s not forget those movies you don’t know but look interesting. You’re willing to risk it for these prices. And the variety? Lordy! Who remembers the great age of VIDEO ALBUMS in the Oughties? I sure do. Since MTV hasn’t played music videos in like a decade, one starves for the vision of those creatives. Who loves Walken dancing on the walls? I do! Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers was a masterwork of ambiguously subversive propaganda, but its sequels and spinoffs are (reportedly) not. Instead, they are silly bugbits & explosions gorefests without the social commentary, and I haven’t seen any of it myself except the first film, which I have watched about a zillion times. I collect every bit of it I come across, though. You never know when you might want to subject yourself to it, and besides, there’s a certain perverse pride in actually owning all of it. I’ll be daring the girls to watch it all, and that’ll be 20 years worth of anticipated entertainment & torture :D

  1. I hope you’re not regretting your move to the snowy north!

That Walken video is such a classic. (A local hair salon has a photo of him on the door with the sign “Walkens welcome,” ha ha.) I also love “Veronica Mars.”

    1. You got a good bunch of movies there. I watched March of the Penguins in a movie theater. Might have even been on IMAX, but don’t hold me to that.

    2. No regrets yet, just obstacles to the goal. :P

Veronica Mars was the Girl’s pick – but the blurb looks interesting. (:

  2. The snow looks like here. Snow, snow, snow, but the strangely warm weather last week melted most of it. Now more snow for a bit.

    Great bunch of movies.

Glad Girl 1 is doing better.

    1. Yuh, we keep getting one or two sunny days between snowfalls that trick us into thinking the shoveling is over, then… Blammo! :D

  3. I remind you that you chose this blizzard. :)
It’s 20 degrees above normal back here in Gilbert!

    1. Also, where is “Big Trouble In Little China”??? :D

      1. “China is in the heart, Jack…”

Still looking for the Shout Factory release..

  4. I don’t do much thrifting these days. One of my old thrifting compulsions was music videos or concerts or documentaries on VHS, DVD, or Blu-ray. I would do 8 mm or Super 8 mm, too, but I never see those in the wild. Plus, a silent music video is fairly pointless. I totally would have picked up that Fatboy Slim. Score!

Our Amazon Firestick has a music video app that takes me right back to the best days of MTV and VH1, complete with commercials. Sometimes I’ll use the VEVO app. But like you said, you can’t beat owning it.
