In Conclusion: You don’t want to do your job, then you either QUIT, or I stop paying you. That’s the way this works. Ever-increasing prices for ever-decreasing service is not the way to encourage people to save your dying dinosaur ass. ):
Oh, and if you *do* like the USPS and think I’m being harsh, then it’s probably best you don’t go on Mail Carrier Reddit and read what actual mail carriers have to say on the subject. Reading what they say to each other and curious customers of their service is not a great way to boost your belief in the USPS.
We recently got a new Mailman, just before I started writing to you. Our old mailman delivered at the same time every day, like clockwork. Our new mailman? Sometimes he delivers our mail at 8:00 AM, sometimes noon, sometimes 8:00 PM, somedays he doesn’t even deliver it at all! With all the online orders people make nowadays, you’d think the postal system would be a lot better than it actually is!
The real question is: If you stop using USPS, who else will you turn to? I’ll be including a stamp in my next letter to you, that way they’ll only be scamming my grandma & not you out of money.
Who else will I turn to? Well, if it comes down to it I’ll build a website that my Correspondents can log into to get their replies to download! You don’t mess with an Internet Wizard when it’s the Internet that has a knife to your throat. >:D
Seriously though, I feel a bit better now that I’ve siphoned that rage out the fingers into Mothra’s keyboard. Amazing therapy, that. (:
Have you heard the recent episode with the Indianapolis Postal Hub? Apparently, it’s went full chaos mode. I ordered some stuff back in November, and it made it to Indianapolis on 12/1. And then straight into the twilight zone. Not heard a word since. A little research showed I most definitely was not alone. The dealer I bought from tried to put a search on the package, but got nothing from the PO. We finally declared the package lost, and he refunded me.
However, I’m afraid it might be spreading. I have another package that just arrived in my home state hub. Usually when it hits there, it’s in my box next day. Even during the holidays. However, I’m now getting the same “In Transit to the Next Facility” msgs, and have been for 2 days…
And don’t get me started on the new route postman who can’t even be bothered to shut our mailbox lid, Leaving me to deal with waterlogged mail. Or a mailbox filled with snow…
Oh, great. That would explain why my mom has issues getting my mail. /;
gotta say, these replies aren’t bolstering my confidence in betterment. A crisis in FAITH! :P
The massive delays at the Indianapolis is connected to the consolidation that’s been happening at USPS the past few years – fewer but larger distribution centers, with more modern sorters. For some reason, USPS doesn’t like to operate with redundancies when they bring these new facilities online and when something goes wrong (like not enough seasonal hires) there’s nowhere for packages to go except onto ever bigger piles. Last year the issue was at the new North Texas distribution center where they couldn’t fit the new machine in the building, but they had already decommissioned the older sorters.
After more than a month of getting slammed, USPS have recently moved packages out of the Indianapolis distribution center to smaller centers and they’re digging out of the backlog, if my experience is any indication. I have been tracking a few packages originating from the Midwest since early December and they are just today out for delivery.
I love the postal service – been sending letters and packages to friends, families, and penpals since I was 8 years old. I think people don’t realize the vital service it provides (I also lived somewhere with no door to door mail delivery for a while) and it has suffered as a result of not being valued for so long.
I would say “what do you expect with the PMG in charge?” but this has gone on for ever since I relocated to MI. We had a carrier who would not deliver packages in the lightest snow fall for “no access to residence” crap. That ended when I went to the local Post Office and just so happened the Postmaster waited on me. After that we got our packages delivered via a new carrier.
We have communal boxes also and the gripe I have is the substitute carrier likes to put too large to remove packages in the box.
I understand your frustration. I also recall when I was without a car for nearly a year. Man, that …….
It is well-known that there is a movement afoot that would like to kill the Post Office and give the money it generates to private entities. This kind of attitude you just suffered may be coming from on high. If the Post Office is not actually eliminated in the next four years, there may be a chance to get it back to the institution we all used to know and love. It will be very hard to revive it if it is killed.
Heh, didn’t you get the memo? America’s into burning it all down now. Better bring the s’mores if you want to join the party (:
Seriously, though, I am disinclined to accept excuses when I’m expecting service – especially when someone is charging more than $5 to deliver a letter to the customer’s door and get a signature, knowing fully that they have no intent to provide that service at all.
Not that UPS is any better at getting signature confirmation (also for an extra charge). I shipped a packageworth over $2000, so I wanted them to hand it to a person, preferably the intended recipient (who was waiting at home for said item). UPS instead dropped the package off in a locker, no signature. Sheesh.
I’ll try FedEx next time I need a signature on delivery.
