The TWDB so far, Visualized in Tableau
Ok, well this trend of making nifty circle charts out of your collection data seems to have caught fire, and you guys know how I am about jumping on the latest Typospherian trend, so here you go: Learn About Tableau This is a chart showing the best-represented manufacturers in all the gallery entries of the […]

New Print-Friendliness at the Typewriter Database, plus recent finds.
TW-DB.com alive or dead?
I caught a conversation on the Yahoo Portable Typewriter forum where a few members noted that the old Typewriter Database site appears to have gone down a couple of days ago. It prompted me to do a little digging to find out what I could about the status of the site, and I’m copying my […]
Pencast 2: New feature at the Typewriter Database
The News from the North
This typecast was written Tuesday, and since then I’ve been inundated with raw scans and a spreadsheet put together by TypesHalfSpaces. A vertitable treasure trove of information on the RaRo type foundry, which I have not had time yet to process. However, look for a big reveal on Georg Sommeregger’s blog soonish regarding the RaRo […]
Typewriter Gallery #1000 reached with Michael H’s 197X Smith-Corona Coronet Automatic 12

Typewriter Database Report: only 7 more galleries left to reach 1000! :D
That’s right, there’s just over a week left until the new year, and the Typewriter Hunters are about to smash through our goal of 1000 typewriter galleries like a football team through a Gatorade banner – probably before Santa saddles up Rudolph for his annual reverse burglary run. Just 7 more to go! In examining […]
977 Typewriter Galleries in, only 23 more to reach 1000!
I just imported 50 records from Michael H’s personal collection database, so we are now at 977 galleries. The race is on for #1000! I was bothered by having the whole front page all be photo-less entries, though, so I changed the query that populates the front page so that it only shows galleries that […]
Shooting Studio, The Typosphere Strikes again, and other thoughts for the new year.
For the new year, I am planning on adding a few data fields to the Typewriter Database: 1) Price Paid (USD) 2) Year Purchased This data will be compiled, but not shown on the individual typewriter galleries. Instead, once there is a sufficient number of data points in there, I am pondering running generalized […]
Typewriter Database Report: Some Questions Answered, and a Challenge.
Here’s a challenge: We’re at 874 Typewriter Galleries entered right now. Who thinks we can get to 1000 galleries entered by the official 1-year anniversary of the new Database on January 1?
Typewriter Database Report: 696 Maunufacturers, 844 Typewriter Galleries, 383 Typewriter Typefaces and 67 Typewriter Hunters!
Right now, I’m still the highest-scoring hunter due to the photo and typesample-rich entries I’ve done, but Nick Beland is hot on my heels and I’m down to just one more typewriter to enter. I sense I will be toppled from the throne soon, now that there actually is a page that counts the scores. […]

Revisiting the Dayton Typewriter – what we know so far…
I’ve updated the Dayton page at the Typewriter Database now that Typospherian Mark Adams has found the *seventh* known surviving Dayton and uploaded a gallery for it to the database. I’ve added links to all of the current information we have: Richard Polt’s ETCetera article on the Dayton and his acquisition of Dayton # AX93 […]
OLYMPIA page updated and corrected at typewriterdatabase.com
The OLYMPIA page has been updated and corrected. OMEF 1980 expanded the serial number range of existing models (SM models gained *13* years of new serial number data and is now complete from 1950 to 1979!) In addition to expanded and corrected date ranges for SM1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9, SF & Traveller, SG Models and most of the […]
Typewriter Database Updates: Olivetti, Silver Reed, Addo
The Olivetti page has been completely redone. With the addition of OMEF 1980 and a re-examination of Schramm 1962, quite a few numbers have changed and a lot of models have been added. Additionally, I’ve added Platen Diameters and some notes from OMEF 80 that state in no uncertain terms that dating an Olivetti from […]
The OMEF Age Guides, 1971-1980: Brother Typewriters
With many thanks to Peter Brill in Australia and Rob Bowker in the UK, we have obtained copies of three known editions of the OMEF Typewriter Age Guide: October 1971, December 1973 and October 1980. A differently sourced copy of the 1973 edition is what was used as Source #6 by Dirk Schumann in compiling […]

Robert Messenger’s research on the Selecta/Superba question.
Updated Mercedes Page with new serial numbers, and the debate over the K45 Superba…
This post by Robert Messenger piqued my interest over the Mercedes serial numbers in the Typewriter Database. They had not yet been updated with the newest information from Source #24, and so with Mr. Messenger’s post in mind regarding the K-45 “Superba/Selekta” issue, I delved into it. This is what Dirk Schumann had compiled from […]

Discussion Threads for Typewriter Hunters now available at The Typewriter Database!
Typewriter hunters now have a new tool to learn more about their machines. I’ve added the ability to add Comments and Replies to Comments to the Typewriter Gallery pages. Each machine has its own Discussion Thread, and only Typewriter Hunters can View the comments. Here’s the first Discussion thread started: Which was started on this […]
Coming updates to the Typewriter Database
646 Manufacturers and Marques, 540 Typewriter Galleries. Not too bad at all! This 50 a week thing was a heady rush, but then about 3 days ago, it all fell silent. The Hunters stopped hunting, and the fields resounded with the chirping of crickets. Inactivity makes me nervous, and when I’m nervous, I get creative. […]
Typewriter Database blasts past 500 individual collector’s galleries!
Whew! It’s been an exciting day for the Typewriter Database. A group of Typewriter Hunters including yours truly has been jockeying for the top spots in the Hunters list on the front page. I tried my best, resorting to uploading parts machines and updating some of my old listings with new links and pictures, but […]
Added Marques of Talleres Alonso S.A. of Valencia, Spain to Typewriter Database…
…and Richard Polt added gallery examples to almost every one of these rare Spanish marques from his amazing collection. Just six of the 50 or so new typewriter galleries that have been added by Typewriter Hunters this week. Check’m out! As you can see, I’m now 7th in most recent activity, and I’m almost out […]
Oooooh, lookit all them pretty typewriters!
Done did a few changes over at the typewriterdatabase.com site, fixed some bugs and redone the front page to highlight the latest typewriter hunting activity. The hunters are getting used to the tools, and this week was quite frenzied with activity. Why don’t you mosey on over and take a look?
Status of Web Projects
As far as the blog is concerned, things are good. Steadily increasing pageviews, with a slump when I took medical leave and didn’t post much, but this past month was the best one ever, and this month is looking to top even that!

ITAM Appreciation: “Joanie” 1964 Hermes 3000
It won’t matter what these fields are called in your application. Here is a list, in order, of what fields should be exported. “Required” fields, if left blank, will result in that record not being imported: 1) Manufacturer/Marque [required](brand) Note: This field will be matched against typewriterdatabase.com’s table of manufacturers. if an exact non-case sensitive […]
