Thermal Madness: Testing the Modes and Settling on a Workflow

Weapon of Choice: 1986 Canon Typestar 4 #Q12013213 Crude, punk-rock pasteup onto A5 sheets, I would’ve drowned a kitten for a setup like this in 1986 to make flyers & zines. This setup and a Xerox machine and me woulda been fast friends! :D Workflow-wise, I’ve learned that it’s best to do your imaging, alcohol wiping and then typing on the thermal sheets first, then paste them up on the pasteup sheet – *then* do the rubber stamping last, as that takes a lot of time to dry and do its bleaching work, and that gets smeary if you try to do the pasteup before it’s dry. Then I set the mechanicals aside to dry and bleach overnight for tomorrow’s blog post. (and OTP submission, cuz this format is about perfect for that.) Joe Van Cleave: Kids Thermal Printing Camera

  1. Am I going to have to send you a universal power adapter for your thermals? Batteries are expensive! Yes, our family room, in particular, is VERY well lit with three large windows and light-colored walls.

    1. Heh, I have power supplies. I’m thinking batteries for remote sessions away fro the wall (:

  2. Worth noting, a good alternative I use in place of expensive D cell batteries… you can get these cylinder “sleeve” adapters that allow you to use normal AA NIMH batteries. The adapter just steps up the diameter to allow them to fit. The capacity is lower than a real D cell, but they do work splendidly in my tape recorders. I’d imagine a thermal wedge would run a decent while off some 2000mAh AA NIMH cells… -Mitchell F.

    1. Good idea!

    2. Well, I’ll have to try a set then (:
