Typecasts in Exile: Arrival & Settlin’ In With a Fresh Typewriter & Desk!

Well, as in the beginning of this long saga, not really a typecast (well, it morphs into one, once I got a typewriter) – but I plead patience as I should have a typewriter soon. I have been checking the thrifts and found a black-shelled Olympia daisywheel, but too many of the keys didn’t work so I passed on it despite the $7.99 price tag. The price was encouraging, if other stores in this town have similar expectations. I have inquired with the clerks about how often they see typewriters pass through, and that question prompted two clerks to say they had one “in the basement/attic” and that they’d bring them in to have me take a look. In a couple of days, I may be on a more satisfactory keyboard than these plastic chicklets! :D

It has been some weeks since my last post, and I apologize to anyone waiting on the edges of their seats for touchdown news. All Hallow’s Eve came and Girl 1 had recovered enough to fly again, but not lift anything, so we couldn’t bring more than the felines and one carry-on. Everything else got tossed or stuffed in boxes to be mailed, if someone remembers to mail them. We got on the plane and I suppose we were lucky given the air travel situation right now, as we only had one re-planing due to the plane we were on running into a luggage cart, one near-collusion on landing, requiring a full-power roller-coaster move to get out of danger and back into the line of planes awaiting landing (let’s see, what’s 2 and a half miles at 350 miles an hour airspeed? I’m no good at math, but my gut tells me “not much”.) The near T-Boning of our Uber just exiting the airport seemed like a minor inconvenience after all that.

  1. Congratulations on a safe arrival in Connecticut; the part of the state mentioned in your post is really beautiful in the summer. Lots of scenic stone walls in the rural areas. The northeastern U.S. is in a cold spell right now. What find! A Royal QDL as well as an interesting physician’s desk with some history to it.

  2. Nice update, that QDL is a real find!

  3. Glad to see you’re safely ensconced in the stoic beauty of New England! Loving that desk (and the QDL)!

  4. Beautiful desk and typewriter, congrats!
Glad to see you made it.
    Happy typewriter hunting.

  5. So happy that you made it to your new home in one piece. Such a nice QDL and very envious of your physician’s desk. I’m looking forward to reading more tales from New England.

  6. Those ancient bits of writing and the QDL are very cool. May they be harbingers of many interesting adventures in your new home.

  7. Such a classic look on that typewriter! I think I had one of those at some point. Could be in storage for all I know. Now that it’s cooler, I should really get in there and see what’s what. Glad to see you’re already finding good things there.
